"Creating a company that truly puts Black women at the centre and innovates around their needs"

We know what it feels like to have to make do because it doesn’t seem like what’s out there is created for you. And that’s exactly why we have decided to make the outsiders our insiders, by creating a company that truly puts Black women at the centre and innovates around their needs. We’ve put together a team that’s as passionate about this problem as we are. We’re here, we’re listening and we aren’t stopping until Ruka is on your shelf - so we think we’re onto a winner.

Our origins

Historically, hair has always been a special part of Black women’s identity.

Zimbabwe, which holds a special place in the Ruka team, is one of the southern regions where ‘Bantu knots’ originated. Like many hairstyles passed down across generations, it represents a source of pride, power and a visual representation of the creativity of Black women.

“Just about everything about a person’s identity could be learned by looking at their hair.”
